The Lesson of the River

I often take my kids to the River. Where I live there are many within walking distance, all exquisitely beautiful all year and fun and cool in the heat of summer.

Also because I go there to do rituals that enhance my life in a myriad of unexpected ways.

Last month I took a very tense 13 year to the river bank and just let her be. At first she was annoyed at being kept there. "Doesn't the water ever get tired? I mean it NEVER stops!" Talk about projection! Then suddenly she relaxed and said: "The river is such a good lesson. It just keeps going, it never gets stuck, it's always moving on. We should be more like the river"

My job is done.

Where do YOU go to be reminded of flow that's always moving on?

  1. When I'm short on time, I walk to a park within walking distance from my house. Something about watching children play and hearing their laughter.

When I have/need a few hours...I drive up to the mountains and sit next to the river and listening to it and the wind blowing through the trees.

  3. I go outside and sit in the wind when I need that reminder of flow...Growing up in Kansas was certainly windy. You get to know the moods of the wind here...Strong and fierce, soft and gentle, scattering, bringing together...the wind ebbs and flows a lot like the tide. And, much like the ocean, it has touched many places. It reaches all the continents, caresses every mountain, kisses every snow bank, and then comes back to you. It brings all things with it and at the same time allows you to let go so it can gently dust away all that you've needed to release. Beautiful, mysterious, gentle, loving, pervasive...reminding me of who I really am.
